Is the fact that germinate only runs on postgresql going to be an issue for this?

We have discussed this in great detail within germinate and have decided to keep germinate postgresql specific. We decided this was the trade off for using postresql features to help maintain referential integrity within the database. We don't expect germinate to be ported to other systems. The schema could be used in other relational databases but many of the functions and triggers wouldn't work.
