ICISworkbook: Designing a workbook template

From ICISWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

A nursery trial is usually done in a regular season. Creating a Workbook for each trial with the same set of applied and observed variables is a repeated task. Hence, a template Workbook for trials with the same factors and variates is a convenient way to handle this repeated task.

In this exercise, you will learn how to design a workbook template for recording the characteristics of the plants.

A. Preparing the Fieldbook

1. Click StudyOpen File. Select the file “F4_template.xls”. You can retrieve this file from the directory X:\ICIS5\Documents\TDM\II Users Manual and Training Material\C. Breeder's Training Course\5 08_09 Using Workbook to manage evaluation data.

2. On the MS Excel menu, click Tools ► Protection ► Unprotect Sheet. You will be asked for a password. Enter the password “DMS” to unprotect the Description sheet.

3. Click the [Observation] tab to go to the Observation sheet.

4. Again, click Tools ► Protection ► Unprotect Sheet and enter the password “DMS” to unprotect the Observation sheet.

5. On the ICISworkbook menu, click Add-ins ► Retrieve Germplasm List. The Retrieve List window (Fig. 1) will, then, appear.

6. Enter “U05WSF4F” in the search box.

7. You will notice that at the lower portion of the window, List variables are being mapped with the corresponding Workbook variables. You can make the necessary changes if there is any.

8. Once you have selected the desired germplasm list and you have already set the mappings, click [OK].

9. Click File ► Open and select “Appendix F.xls”. This file can be obtained from the directory X:\ICIS5\Documents\TDM\II Users Manual and Training Material\C. Breeder's Training Course\5 08_09 Using Workbook to manage evaluation data.

10. From the topmost block of yellow cells in Appendix F.xls (Fig. 2), select only the last four rows (PMKEY, OBJECTIVE, START DATE, and END DATE) and paste them on the same row numbers in the Description sheet of F4_template.xls.

11. Then, select each of the remaining two blocks of yellow cells from Appendix F.xls. Paste them on the appropriate group of yellow cells in F4_template.xls.

12. Copy the VALUEs of PMKEY, OBJECTIVE, START DATE, and END DATE of Appendix F.xls to PMKEY, OBJECTIVE, START DATE, and END DATE of F4_template.xls.

13. Copy the VALUEs of the CONDITIONs NURSERY, YEAR, SEASON, LOCATION, and INVESTIGATOR of Appendix F.xls to the corresponding rows of F4_template.xls (see the yellow colored cells). Copy the values of highlighted constants (from Description up to Seed Disposition) from Appendix F.xls to F4_template.xls.

14. On the MS Excel menu, click File ► Save As. Enter “U05WSF4.xls” as the name.

15. On the Description sheet of the file U05WSF4.xls, fill in the VALUEs of the CONDITION.

B. Entering the Data

1. You are now ready to enter the data. Select the block of data under the variate columns (columns with the blue-colored headings) in the Observation sheet of Appendix F.xls. Paste the selected block of data on the corresponding cells in the Observation sheet of U05WSF4.

2. Check the data entry by reading back with a colleague.

3. On the MS Excel menu, click FileSave.

4. On the ICISworkbook menu, click Study ► Load to upload the data to the local database.

5. Once the study has been loaded, close the ICIS Workbook.

C. Retrieving the Data

1. When you have already started the ICIS Workbook from the Launcher, click Study ► Retrieve ► Dataset.

2. Select the study you want to view and the dataset, as well. Click [OK].
