ICISworkbook: Deriving the F2 nursery

From ICISWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The succeeding steps will teach you how to generate your F2 list by advancing the F1 lines using ICIS Workbook. We assume that F2 seeds from all F1 plants in each F1 plot are bulked and space planted in plots for the F2 nursery. This means that the F2 Nursery planting list can look exactly like the F1 planting list.

1. Click ListAdvance a Line.

Fig. 1. Advance a line

Two windows will appear on each side of the screen. On the left, you’ll see the List Explorer window (see Fig. 2) where you can select the germplasm list that will be the source of the F2 nursery. On the right, you’ll see the Advance a Line window (see Fig. 2) which gives you the control in creating your F2 list.

2. First, you should select the source germplasm list by double clicking the list name in the treeview at the left. Note that it is possible for your source germplasms to come from different list sources. In this exercise, double click the "U04DSF1" list which you created in the previous exercise.

An Open Template dialog box (Fig. 2) will appear asking for a list template that you may want to use. In this case, you will not be using any template so just click [Cancel].

3. The U04DSF1 list will be opened and you will be prompted to define the Naming Convention of the new lines to be made.

a. Select “DESIGNATION” from the dropdown list to match the Designation entry and leave the Plants Selected and the Suffix entry as blank.

b. Upon clicking [Apply], the naming convention for the ENTRYCODE of the new lines would be defined next. In this case, go to the [Sequence] tab and enter the entries (see Table 1) in the Naming Convention window.

Prefix B
Start No. 1
Fixed Width True
Width Size 3
Suffix F2

c. When you click [Apply], the Naming Convention for the SOURCE of the new lines will be asked. This time, go to the [Combination] tab and check the List Name and ENTRYCODE boxes. Click [Apply].

4. At this point, you must now select the lines to be advanced. In this case, select all the 64 entries under the DESIGNATION column of the active worksheet. Then, click on the [Source Germplasm] button in the Advance a Line window (Fig. 4) to pick-up the needed information.

The List Explorer window will disappear along with the source worksheet and a new list template is created to contain the resulting new generation.

5. You must now specify the germplasm properties of the new lines at the lower half of the Advance a Line window. For this exercise, specify the information (found in Table 2) in the said window.

6. You have the option to do a one-by-one (interactive) advancing or a batch process through the [Advance Line] button or the [Advance All Lines] button, respectively. In this exercise, click the [Advance All Lines] button.

7. Since the name IR90757 which is the first cross you made in the previous exercise, already exist in the database, the Germplasm Name Already Exist window will appear to inform you about the situation and to give you options on how to proceed. For this exercise, select the option "Add a new germplasm with the same name” and click [OK to All] to apply the selected option to all the other new germplasms that might also encounter a name conflict.

8. Then, 64 new germplasm names will be registered into the database as a result of the line advancing process. You will be notified of the success of the operation through a message box.

9. Upon clicking [OK], you will be directed to the Description sheet. You can now specify the entries (indicated in Table 3) in the Description sheet to prepare for loading the germplasm list.
