ICISworkbook: Creating the F3 and F4 nurseries

From ICISWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The succeeding steps will teach you how to generate your F3 and F4 list using ICISworkbook. The procedures in this exercise are the same as the previous exercise with only some variations. Here, you will form the F3 list by selecting four plants from each plot in the F2 nursery. At the same time, you will generate the F4 nursery by bulking the seeds from selected rows in the F3 list.

A. Generating the F3 Nursery List

1. Click ListAdvance a Line.

Fig. 1. Advance a line

2. When you see the List Explorer window on the left, double click the "U04WSF2" list that you created in the previous exercise. Click [Cancel] in the Open Template dialog box since you’re not going to use any list template.

Fig. 2. Opening list

3. The U04WSF2 list will then be opened and you will be prompted to define the Naming Convention of the new lines to be made.

a. Select “DESIGNATION” from the dropdown list to match the Designation entry and enter “4” in the Plants Selected box and click [Apply].
Fig. 3. Naming Convention - Designation

b. You need to define the Naming Convention for the ENTRYCODE of the new lines. In this case, go to the [Sequence] tab and enter the information found in Table 1.

c. When you click [Apply], the last Naming Convention that needs to be setup is the SOURCE of the new lines. This time, go to the [Combination] tab and check the List Name and ENTRYCODE boxes and click [Apply].

4. At this point, you must now select the lines to be advanced. So, select all the 64 entries under the DESIGNATION column of the active worksheet. Then, click the [Source Germplasm] button in the Advance a Line window to pick-up the needed information.

5. The List Explorer window will disappear along with the source worksheet and a new list template is created to contain the resulting new generation. You have to specify the germplasm properties of the new lines at the lower half of the Advance a Line window. For this exercise, specify the germplasm properties (indicated in Table 2) in the said window.

6. Upon clicking the [Advance All Lines] button, 256 new germplasm names will be registered into the database. You will be notified of the success of the operation through a message box.

7. When you click [OK], you will be directed to the Description sheet. Specify the information (Table 3) in the corresponding variables.

8. Then click ListLoad List. Do the succeeding procedures as what you've done during the first exercise of this training.

B. Generating the F4 Nursery List

1. Click ListAdvance a Line.

2. Select the source germplasm list by double clicking the "U05DSF3" list that you just created recently. Again, click [Cancel] in the Open Template dialog box.

3. You will be asked of the Naming Convention.

a. Select “DESIGNATION” from the dropdown list to match the Designation entry. Then, select the Suffix option, and enter “B” in the box provided.

b. Upon clicking [Apply], the Naming Convention for the ENTRYCODE of the new lines would be defined next. In this case, enter the information (found in Table 4) in the [Sequence] tab.

c. When you click [Apply], the Naming Convention for the SOURCE of the new lines will be asked. This time, go to the [Combination] tab. Check the List Name and ENTRYCODE list entries and click [Apply].

4. This time, randomly select about 50 to 70 entries under the DESIGNATION column of the active worksheet. These represent the entries you choose to advance by field inspection and data collection on the F3 nursery. To do multiple selections in Excel, just press down the CTRL key while selecting the germplasm names. Then, click the [Source Germplasm] button in the Advance a Line window to pick-up the needed information.

5. You must now specify the germplasm properties (see Table 5) of the new lines at the lower half of the Advance a Line window.

6. Click the [Advance All Lines] button. Depending on the number of entries you choose to advance earlier, the same number of new germplasm names will be registered into the database and you will be notified of the success of the operation through a message box.

7. Upon clicking [OK], you will be directed to the Description sheet where you can now specify the information (indicated in Table 6) to prepare for loading the germplasm list.

8. Then, click ListLoad List. Do the succeeding procedures as what you've done during the first exercise of this training.

C. Adding Checks to a Nursery List

1. Open the F4 nursery list U05WSF4 by clicking ListRetrieve List.

Fig. 9. Retrieving List

2. The List Explorer window will appear on the left side of the screen. In here, double click the "U05WSF4" list that you created in the previous exercise. Again, click [Cancel] in the Open Template dialog box since you’re not going to use any list template. The chosen list will be opened.

Fig. 10. Chosen list

3. Still in the List Explorer window, go to the [Checks] tab which you can see at the bottom left of the screen.

Fig. 11. Checks tab

4. Then, you must select another list to serve as your “check” list by clicking its list name in the treeview only once. For this exercise, click the list "CHECKS". Remember to click only once, otherwise you’ll be replacing your current list with the contents of the “check” list. On the other hand, if you forgot to select a different list name to serve as your “check” list and you pressed the [Add] button, the application will notify you to select another list.

5. Now after selecting a “check” list, you must configure how you want the check germplasms to be distributed all over your current list. For this exercise, set the configurations (see Table 7).

Table 7. Configurations on distributing check germplasms

Insert first at entry number 1
Insert for every no. of entries 10

Then, select the option “Add all checks at every insertion point”, and click the [Add] button. The first insertion point would be before the first germplasm in your active list and after every 10 germplasms in the active list, the whole set of “check germplasms” will be inserted.

Fig. 12. Active worksheet

6. Upon clicking the [Add] button, you’ll see that the “check germplasms” were inserted in your active list according to your specifications.

Fig. 13. Add Checks confirmation

7. A message box will also remind you to update the ENTRYCODE column. Upon clicking [OK], select any cell in the ENTRYCODE column then click Add-insGMS FunctionsFill with Sequence.

8. This will launch the Naming Convention window where you can specify the information indicated in Table 8.

9. Finally, to save the changes you’ve made, go to the Description sheet and change the list name to "U05WSF4F" to prepare for loading the germplasm list.

10. Then, click ListLoad List and do the succeeding procedures as what you've done during the first exercise of this training.
